5 Lessons Learned From Goalkeeping

January 8, 2007

1. "I Don’t Owe You Nothing!": Sounds harsh, but ultimately it is true. No coach, goalkeeper trainer, team-mate or even God for that matter owes you anything. You owe it unto yourself to work hard to be the best goalkeeper you can be.

2. "Luck Is Labors Reward": It is an old Roman proverb that is my mantra…I live by it. If you work hard enough at your goalkeeping, you will be lucky enough to be given a chance, the rest is up to you.

3.  Most People Don’t Care: People want results, don’t whinge to your goalkeeper coach, gaffer or team mates that it didn’t happen the way you wanted it…make it happen. True professionals don’t want to hear, and don’t care for excuses, they want results.

4.  Learn from grandpa Sean: Ever watched The Rock? Remember the line by Sean Connery (who is a huge fan of Man U by the way) "Losers always complain about their best…" Winners on the other hand…have a lot of fun with the prom queen…you catch my drift.

5. Innovate: Study the best goalkeeeprs of the past, or the present? Why were they memorable? Were they great commanders? Did they have the best diving technique? What made them great goalkeepers? Great goalkeepers found remarkable ways to stand out from the crowd and provide longevity to their game. Study them, and learn.
