Thinking on your feet

Drills to enhance goalkeeper distribution with the feet
June 10, 2009
Today’s game demands more from the goalkeeper. The back pass rule had inevitably changed the rules associated with the pace of the game. Modern goalkeepers must not only think quickly, but distribute the ball quickly. One of the hardest qualities to develop in a young goalkeeper is his/her ability to not only kick for distance from a stationary position (goal kick), but also how to enact an attacking motion from the back pass with precision.
Following are some great drills to help the goalkeeper get a “feel” for the ball from John Murphy’s book The Full Season Goalkeeper Training Program, provided by our partners World Class Coaching. The following drill focuses on helping the goalkeeper distribute more effectively with their feet from a short intermediate and long distribution range.

Receive from server (catch or feet) and open up w/ 1st
