I wrote to this forum in August regarding my son who was 15 and the possible trend towards shorter goalies in Spain. In that time my son was 5ft 10. 7 months later he has grown 1 inch so 5, 11. In September 2012 he will start in the Barnet FC Youth Academy which is a pro League 2 club in England. He is now 16 years and 2 months. I have done a lot of research and I believe that for 90% of people by 17 years of age you're finished growing. So my son's main growth spurt is over, I believe he has one more inch to grow at 16 so when he is 17 his final height will be 6ft dead. This is short for a Premier League goalie, many coaches would say too short. However, there is one goalkeeper who is bucking the trend in the EPL, this is a Dutch goalie called Michel Vorm who plays for Holland and Swansea City. He is only 6ft in height and is possibly in the top five EPL goalies this season alongside Hart, De Gea etc. Regarding short goalies at whatever level my belief is they have a disability whichever way you look at it in terms of the psychological mindset of coaches and practically speaking in extra inches needed to grab crosses and claw away shots. So my clear message to short goalies is as follows: forget about exploring artificial growth techniques and quit worrying if you're going to grow anymore or not, take it that you won't, if it happens treat it as a bonus. Concentrate solely on technique. The height disability is not insurmountable whether you're 5,6 or 6ft at whatever level - supreme reflexes, perfect footwork and overall technique will get you out of trouble and compensate satisfactorily as Vorm has so ably demonstrated in the EPL.

Hey, I'm a goalie and I've been playing in this position since i was 7 and now im 16 and i think you are so right. I'm only 5'5" but i have a good vertical and I can make the difficult saves. I think that determination is a strong thing to do with my success so far and maybe its the practice lol.

Thanks from a shorty in a world a towers :)

if i was to do nets how could i improve in net and this will probably sound stupid is there anything i can to get taller.

Thanks, Robert

I recently wrote a comment before I went to football training. I just got here a few mins ago and showed the article to my gaffer. He still says that 6'9 is far to big to be a goalkeeper and that I should be playing basketball instead. I told him that Thomas Sorensen is 6'8 and he plays I'm goals as that that's only an inch smalle than me. He retaliated by saying that he knows how to save all varieties of shots and that I don't. I am just about to start training and I will prove him wrong.
