The 20-30 degree forward angle toward the incoming shot also improves the chance that a deflected shot will bounce outside your post.
Good work Coach!

Just sticking my two pennies worth in this old argument that has been going on since I was a kid aged 12, 25 years ago. I was the school goalkeeper for 7 years until I hit the age of 14 and still standing only 5ft 3inc, i was dropped for a lad who was 5ft 10. He had no technique and would flap at crosses despite his extra height. I at the time was shunted out to full back, so I flat refused to play for the school team again.

i joined a junior Saturday side who were after a keeper and after winning a few medals got scouted for tranmere rovers, Blackburn and bury. All rejected me because of my height (I was 5ft 7inc). One coach even said to me "if only you could borrow 5inches you'd be perfect".

I continued to play despite growing no more and never getting another chance at pro level. Medals and success at amateur level followed and at age 37 am still in demand so it was never about skill..

I think sadly, especially in Britain, coaches are quick to put players in boxes "your 6ft plus so you can only play goal, cb or striker". "Your short, your a striker, winger or fb". I often wonder how many talented players have fallen through the gaps because physically they were different. Sadly until the training regimes change in this country, physicality rather than technique will always come 1st.

Just watch the pro's on TV we see shockin 6ft + keepers every week and I do wonder how many great shorter keepers are sat at home thinking "how is he a pro and not me?"

As for me, I'll still be playing in goal at 50, still trying to improve.

If i could pass anything onto younger readers, id just say dont be downhearted, just keep playing because you love it and keep trying to improve and maybe one day attitudes will change, sadly just not for me.

My name is Ricardo Pinto and I'm currently a goalkeeper standing at 5'9'' and I play in college at the NCAA D3 level. I've played goalkeeper for a very long time and I have let in less goals and performed much better than my taller goalkeeper teammates. Iker Casillas is my idol because he is not even tall. I'm pretty sure he is only 5'9'' at most and he is the best in the world.

This link is a photo of Iker and Jose Mourinho standing next to one another. For all of you who don't know, Jose Mourinho is listed as a little over 5'8''. Use Iker as your motivation to one day be a professional and achieve your dreams.

As a goalkeeper who has constantly been tormented by kids and even coaches due to my height, I find hope in watching Iker Casillas. He's my idol and because of him I still have faith in reaching somewhat of a career in football. I'm not that short either (5'10'') so I never understood why the 6'+ goalkeepers get all the praise. Some are insanely tall and still can not show skills to be considered a good goalkeeper. And just fyi to everyone, Iker Casillas is not even 6'. He's below that. Take a look at this picture of Jorge Campos and Iker Casillas side by side.

Jeremy Janot a great goalkeeper from Saint Etienne Club in france stands 176cm not to mention that when Germany sent a starting keeper Andreas Kopke stood at 181cm and beat out a lot tall German keepers. Height has nothing to do w/ it. It is talent. I stand at 170cm or 5'7"....I know the ignorance that a lot of American coaches posses. If I would have known I would have not wasted my time to long trying to get on an American College team and would have gone to Mexico where they appreciate talent no matter the side...Jorge Campos was 5'6" and Oscar Perez their goalkeeper in 2010 SA is 5'7"...plus the Mexican Soccer league is a lot better than the MLS....MLS sucks...even some European countries that have way better soccer than all the American countries love talent...Spain (World Champions), France, Italy and yes even Germany....the Scandinavian countries are genetically taller so the competition w/ height would be an issue the Premier League is another...go where they want your talent not your presence and the skies the limit don't give up.

Well most young kids are still growing and they keep growing
Me I'm only 5'10 and people always tell me I will never make it and they're right but people got to remember this: it doesn't matter how tall are you or how short you are, it's the big heart that wins it all.
I will never make it to the MLS or any kind of league but I rather know what I love to do and keep playing then give up and quit..

Hello, my name is Yash.

This question has always been a main concern to me "Short vs. Tall goalkeeper". I am myself a young goalkeeper. With the age of 17, height 1.78 m and weight 62 kg - I am being recongnised as a very talented goalkeeper according to the community.

I have go the reflexes, agility and very great foot-work. My divings are excellent. The only main isse with me is that I cannot take goal-kicks properly (which I will be training over the summer here in Australia).

I am planning to gain weight, aiming for at least 70 kg. By this, I will be much stronger in the air.

I think that you do not need to be tall to be a keeper. The height does mainly not matter according to my experiences.

With the right mentality you could succeed in anything!

Regards.
