FC Dallas rough up their goalkeepers with a new “sidekick”!

March 12, 2009

Sidekick Soccer Training MachineGoalkeepers these days are feeling the brunt of a new wave of football technology. Sports scientists are conjuring up cocky ways of making us bad fellas between the sticks look like…well, pansies. Lighter footballs, boots with the same look as a star ship from Star Trek, and jerseys that make the Roswell aliens bodysuits look like Marvin the Martian’s kilt (I’m in good form here aren’t I).

Drew Keeshan, our good friend from FC Dallas (look out for the forthcoming interview here at Keeper Skool) has brought in a cool new way of keeping his goalkeepers Ray Burse, Dario Sala and Josh Lambo on their toes…literally. Sidekick was developed by Seattle Sports Sciences, Inc. as a means of developing the reflexes and shot stopping abilities of FC Dallas, without Drew having to break a sweat…Nice!

Seattle Sports Sciences, Inc. website states that the sidekick can:

  • Bend the ball into the upper V from 25 yards (25m)
  • Provide precise inswinging and outswinging crosses, from the corner, from the midfield stripe, or anywhere in between
  • Deliver a gentle ball to the chest of a 12-year old from 15 yards (15m)
  • Reproduce through balls and goal kicks of up to 75 yards (70m)

Another feature of the technology is that it can pump out balls at a whopping 30-115 kmph, and has been given the thumbs up by none other than German maestro Jurgen Klinsmann. Following is a video of Drew talking about The Sidekick at the FC Dallas training ground:
