Will ‘The Beast’ be unleashed in South Africa?

November 26, 2009

Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen has not yet given up hope of representing his country at the World Cup finals.

Adored by home supporters, the man they nickname ‘The Beast’, is enjoying a fine debut season in the Premier League and has already received recognition from national coach Morten Olsen, by receiving a call up for a recent qualifier against Portugal. However, Jensen remains uncapped and at 34 years of age, time and the sports betting odds, may be against him. Speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire, the Burnley stopper said: “I’m probably fifth in line in his [Morten Olsen's] point of view.

“At least now they’ve told me the door is open. The only thing I’m thinking about is trying my best for Burnley.”

Jensen signed for the Clarets in 2003 after a disappointing spell at West Bromwich Albion and is now the longest serving player at the club, making 248 appearances in the process.

The Dane has been a mainstay for Burnley this season and has played a key part in helping them to their current position in the top half of the table. He has also kept three clean sheets, including one in a famous victory over Manchester United; a game in which Jensen also saved a penalty.

Despite these eye catching performances, the keeper knows that he faces a tough task to make the national squad for South Africa.

“There’s a bigger chance for [Peter] Schmeichel if he comes out of retirement” retorted Jensen.

“But hopefully I can find my way into the squad – we’ll see, it’s not my decision.

“It’s definitely going to be my last chance, but fingers crossed it’ll be enough at the end of the season but only time will tell.”
