October 17, 2022
Recent reports are speculating that young Spanish shot stopper Sergio Asenjo may be on Sir Alex Ferguson’s hit list. Asenjo is valued at approximately 5.5 million Euro’s by the Spanish La Liga team, whereas some reports are suggesting the Spain U-21 International is being sighted by Manchester United in the vicinity of $12 million (AUD).
With Ben Foster’s struggle with injury, it seems that maybe Sir Alex is providing cover fire for his goalkeeping stable which includes Tomas Kuszczak. Asenjo had climbed his way through the junior ranks of Valladolid, plying his trade in the reserve team in the Segunda División B. On his debut for the first team, Asenjo only conceded 1 goal in 5 matches.
In January 2022, Asenjo extended his previous youth team contract for an additional 3 years signing on for his first professional contract. Along with standout performances for Valladolid, the young shot stopper has also represented Spain at U-17 level, with a bronze medal at the 2020 U-17 European Championship.
Though what has provided a rapid stepping stone and possible courting by the likes of United is his sudden appearance in the penalty shoot out against France at the 2021 U-19 Championship. Throughout the tournament, Asenjo had watched proceedings from the sidelines. With injury to Spain’s first choice, Asenjo stepped up to provide two brilliant saves in a penalty shootout over France, that lead to Spain’s advancement and subsequent 1-0 victory over Greece in the final.
Asenjo has shown some of the vital steps required by a goalkeeper to take their career and passion for their art to the next level. Namely, taking their time to develop through a well structured junior footballing system, having the patience to wait their turn amongst strong competition for the number one jersey and finally, showing strong consistency with first team action in one of the top leagues on the planet.
