Keeper has faith in Wigan

May 9, 2025

Wigan Athletic are still facing a massive fight against relegation from the Premier League, but their goal keeper Ali Al Habsi reckons they have done enough to avoid the drop.

The Latics have been sitting down the wrong end of the table for virtually the entire season but Roberto Martinez has done well to keep morale high and keep them scrapping until the end.

With two games to go they are one point off safety and now face a massive Premier League relegation six-pointer against rock-bottom West Ham at the DW Stadium this weekend.

If Wigan want to avoid relegation then three points from this game is vital and they could condemn the Hammers to the Championship also, but it is dog-eat-dog coming into the business end of the season, as those looking to bet on Premier League weekend games will know.

Al Habsi, who has been one bright spark for Martinez’s team this season, told the Evening Post he thinks the draw with Aston Villa last time out could play a “huge part” going into the West Ham game and confidence took a boost as a result and the Premier League tips reflect this.

“We are playing fantastic football – not just at the moment but for most of the season. We have been unlucky at times not to get the results we have deserved, but we are not out of it yet,” the Oman stopper added.

“The team, the manager, everyone deserves to be playing in this league – and we will do everything we can to make it happen.”

Martinez recently challenged his Wigan players to step up over the remaining weeks of the season, claiming they are in control of their own destiny as they look to avoid Premier relegation on May 22nd.

Penalty Kick Strategies for Goalkeepers

October 24, 2024

For goalkeepers, penalty kicks are the hardest job. Within a second, a player can line up, place the ball to the goal, and score before the goalie even has a chance to think what to do! It is always a good idea to have a preplanned (and pre-practiced) strategy for penalty kicks, if you are a keeper. Read more

How To Build An Effective Wall

August 15, 2024

Whether the ball is 18 yards out or 30 yards out, a goalkeeper has to feel comfortable on an opposing free kick. How to get centred and attack the ball more efficiently?

April 20, 2024

Is there a mathematical approach to goalkeeping? It’s a question that goes through my mind often when creating a drill for my goalkeeper trainees. And while we may be oblivious to this notion whilst conducting a drill (we often look toward technique alone) if we are “calculated” in our approach to specific drills then we can certainly create greater efficiencies in the way a goalkeeper covers their goal area. 5 Super Circuit Routines for Goalkeeping Strength

October 21, 2022

David James goalkeeper training for EnglandThe previous article I discussed the planning stage of the GK’s program and how to incorporate testing results into the overall plan. I also stated that too often coaches do not have a plan that extends beyond the present session. It is imperative that we move away from the style of coaching and add some science to what we are doing. This month I want to look at training the GK. Read more

Fitness Planning Tips to Turbocharge Goalkeeping Performance

September 16, 2022

Gianluigi Buffon goalkeeper training for ItalyLast month I wrote about the starting point of a GK’s athletic development program (physiological testing) and this month we will continue along the path. So you have conducted the right tests and now you are sitting down with your GK with a bunch of data asking yourself the question where now? The data gives us specific information on the present physiological status of your GK, allows us to compare against others and most importantly is integral in the design of the program. Our path has taken us to the planning stage and this is where we sit down with our GK and map out a plan to improve their performance. Read more
